Spammer E-mail Address Forging
A new trend has recently taken shape. Spammers are increasingly forging
valid e-mail addresses to send out spam. Although the messages are never
actually sent through the victim's server, they end up getting all the
bounces from that spam because the spammer chose to use their e-mail
address on the message's From or Return-Path header.
(For more information about the problem, check out this
Computerworld article.)
Although the original mail protocol, SMTP, wasn't designed to prevent
such forging, a new method of prevention has arrived on the scene. With
a new technology called
Sender
Policy Framework (SPF), it is now possible to stop such forgeries.
If you would like to have SPF added to your account, it's pretty
straight-forward. You just need to e-mail
support@stormweb.ca
with the outgoing (SMTP) mail server or servers you use to send out mail.
If you use only webmail, just note that in the e-mail instead. After we
receive your request, we can add the SPF record for your domain.
